Raiders of the Lost Appliances Update
I owe you all an apology, Dear Readers. This was meant to be Monday’s post. I got up Monday morning, looked it over and thought I hit the ‘publish’ button. I guess I hit ’save’ instead. I have a good excuse - I was up for hours with a sick doggy (he’s back to normal, thank goodness!). I guess I just wasn’t all there Monday morning. So here it is. Enjoy!
Since I wrote the post Raiders of the Lost Appliances, my husband’s co-worker recommended this ice cream recipe:
STRAWBERRY BIG RED ICE CREAM
2 sm. pkgs. strawberries, thawed
2 cans Eagle Brand milk
2 (10 oz.) bottles of Big Red soda pop
Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Pour into freezer can and finish filling with milk. Note: To make richer ice cream, add 3 beaten eggs and 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Makes 1 gallon. (Note: Be careful with raw eggs! Maybe use a pasteurized egg product to be on the safe side, if you must have that extra rich flavor. Cheaper to just leave them out, though! Oh, and that Eagle Brand milk must be sweetened, condensed - Tessie)
This looks like it could be pretty cost effective (somehow it makes a whole gallon!). I haven’t tried it yet, because I still have plenty of my expensive home-made version, but it sounds good. I don’t know what ‘Big Red’ soda pop is, but probably any strawberry-flavored soda would work. And actually, you don’t even need an expensive ice cream maker to make this, just a strong mixing arm. (I think thorough mixing and a very chilled container are key to a successful homemade ice cream). One of these days I’ll give it a whirl and let you know.
By the way, I have unearthed even more ‘lost’ appliance treasures: a quesadilla maker, a waffle maker, and two popcorn poppers. I really like quesadillas, waffles, and popcorn so I will put these to good use (one of these days).

Eagle Brand milk seems to be the magic potion in ice cream recipes. I’ll try the Big Red.

Oh, that’s good to know. I’ll have to splurge and get that instead of the store brand when I try this.
