Now THAT’S Cheap

The other day I was all set to wash some dishes. But I couldn’t find my rubber gloves.

Oh, yeah. I threw out my favorite (expensive) heavy-duty pair because I got water inside of them and they dried out stinky. Yuk!

This made my frugal heart sad. Those gloves were still in good shape, other than the stink.

But I need gloves to wash my dishes because I use the hottest water possible. Not because I worry about dishpan hands. The time to worry about that is long past.

After rooting around under the sink for a while, all I could come up with was one right-handed glove, of the cheap yellow variety. The weird thing is, it was brand new. So what happened to its mate? (That’s an unanswered question. I just don’t know).

I was mad (at myself). I needed those gloves. Maybe I would have to make a special trip to the store. Which I hate to do.

But then I started thinking about how I actually do dishes. Usually, I grab an item out of the hot water with my left hand, and scrub with the right.

Eureka. I really only need one glove.

Since I only have a right glove, I have had to reverse the operation. But it works out pretty good.

It occurred to me that this might be a good way to extend the life of a pair of rubber gloves. Just use one at a time. And actually, though I initially thought of doing this just temporarily until I could get to the store, I still haven’t gotten around to buying a complete pair. It will be fun to see how long I can make that single yellow glove last.

Now THAT’S cheap!
