Go Go, Yogurt, Go
Yep. I’m really diggin’ this homemade yogurt dealio more and more.
A few days ago I hit a Frugal grandslam, thanks in large part to my cheap yogurt. Here’s the 411:
I roasted up one of my cheap Turkeys a few days ago. A few days later I knew I could squeeze one final meal out of the shrinking carcass. That would be the fifth turkey inspired creation from this one oh-so-giving bird.
Inspiration was starting to lose steam, though. So I knew it was time to consult one of my go-to cookbooks, The Use-It-Up Cookbook A Guide for Minimizing Food Waste by Lois Carlson Willand.
I found just the recipe I needed, Creamed Turkey Paprikash. I had everything it called for except…sour cream. The recipe actually called for a CUP of sour cream which is a lot of sour cream. Fattening.
So instead I substituted a cup of my homemade non-fat yogurt. It worked great, and this dish was really yummy.
To summarize, here’s how I figure my el cheapo grandslam: Five meals from dirt cheap turkey; substituted cheap non-fat homemade yogurt for expensive fattening store-bought sour cream; had enough left-overs of Creamed Turkey Paprikash for nice contribution to Thursday night Free Dinner Buffet Night. Straight outta the park!
