Christmas is Over. For Now.
Boo! I love Christmas, so I’m sad when it’s over. Thank goodness there’s always next year.
As usual, I received lots of great gifts that are just totally ME!
This year my kind, generous brother gave me a Kindle. A Kindle is a space-age “book”. This device is a frugal bibliophile’s dream come true. Here’s why.
It turns out that downloading books is much less expensive than actually buying the little suckers. (Let me just say right here, right now that I will forever and always love real actual books. But this Kindle is the bee’s knees). This makes sense, of course, because there isn’t anything in the way of manufacturing costs involved. Let me just tell you what I have downloaded so far, so you can get the picture:
200+ works of Rudyard Kipling for $4.97
500+works of Charles Dickens for $4.97
A Vampire Novel by J.R. Ward (which name escapes me at the moment) that my sister and her awesome co-worker Sandy recommended for $5.97.
Current bestsellers seem to run about $9.99, which sure beats the up-to-$30-cover-price of the hard copies.
Like any true book lover, I had my initial reservations. Foremost among these was the potential eye-strain factor. Well, let me assure you that is not an issue. I find it very comfortable to read; in fact, to date I have spent many many happy hours curled up with my Kindle. Yesterday I just finished Kim (by Mr. Rudyard Kipling) and my eyes didn’t feel tired at all (p.s. that is one of my all-time favorite books).
Another really neat thing about the Kindle is this: you know that sad feeling you get when you have to put down a good book because you have to go be a responsible adult and do responsible adult things (like clean the toilet)? Well, Kindle helps book lovers deal with that dreadful feeling, too. Every time you turn off the Kindle it goes to a screen-saver, and each one is different. So it’s kind of fun to turn it off just to see what picture will come up next. So far I have seen Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Mark Twain, and Agatha Christie, among others. But not Rudyard Kipling (yet).
I’m one of those people that has a book in her purse at all times. Now I can carry 1500!!!! books in my purse at one time.
There is even a bigger size Kindle that can hold 3500 books. Wow. I just….Wow.
Ok, so if I don’t see y’all-Happy New Year!
