Frugal Idea for June 11th, 2009

Birthday Savings? Not!

Today is my honey’s Birthday!  Yay! See People, I haven’t killed him yet with my solar cookery.

In our house birthdays are NOT frugal.  I think this stems from my own family tradition.  Though my parents were extremely careful with their money,  they always gave us great birthdays and Christmases.

So to this day I always like to splurge a little on gift-giving occasions, for those I love.  I can afford it, because I’m SUCH a frangel the rest of the year (that’s a Frugal Angel, in case you were wondering).

Of course, I can’t tell you today what I got my hubby.  But it is AWESOME! Maybe I’ll have a big reveal tomorrow.

His birthday lands on an important basketball game this year.  And one of the teams involved happens to be his beloved Lakers.  So this is a birthday dream come true.

In the meantime, to keep us all in the proper Frugal Frame of Mind, I’ll tell you all about the delicious, cheap dinner I made last night.

I made an easy, cool (it was hot yesterday) macaroni salad.  To give it that little extra oomph that a dinner entree simply demands, I chopped up a couple of leftover chicken breasts, and added it to the noodles. This is one of those non-recipe recipes, but here is more-or-less what I did, if you’re interested:

Cooked 4 cups of dry macaroni noodles in boiling water for 8 minutes.

Added a couple of good gobs of mayonaise to the cooked, rinsed noodles.

Sliced up some olives, and put those in.

Added a little garlic salt, to taste.

Chopped up the left-over chicken and put that in, too (that was chicken I made in the solar cooker).

Then I covered the big bowl (this made a lot) with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge a few hours to chill out, man.

dsc01787And not to mention, but we had a tornado warning last night, which is really weird.  Here we all are in our closet hidey-hole, including the cat.  What a crew!  Sparky the Chihuahua mix looks demented.  She was really scared.  But she was using up all my oxygen!  Aaargh.

I’m a terrible photographer.  But the good news is I lived to blog another day.  Yay!
