Bag It and Drag It

Aaaaargh! I ran out of trash bags.  The tall kitchen kind.

This is annoying on a couple of levels.

First of all, it’s just a pain to run out of trash bags.

Second of all, I’m a pretty good shopper.  So I usually don’t run out of stuff before I go shopping again (no wasted trips!).  It’s kind of like a game. I was disappointed in myself.

But luckily I have plenty of plastic grocery bags.  The only problem is that they are small, and my kitchen trash can is tall.

I thought about hanging a hook somewhere, than hanging the plastic grocery bag from this.  Then I thought that sometimes I think too hard.

So I ended up taking a small plastic trash bin from the laundry room and putting it in the kitchen.  Easy. I temporarily put it on top of the big trash can so the pooches couldn’t get in it. Not very elegant, but, heck, it’s “free”.

But then I got tired of looking at this eyesore. So I emptied out a smaller bottom cabinet and stashed the little trash can in there.  Yuck!  Too stinky.  Clearly I needed to come up with Plan B.  Please come to me Plan B!

Pheww! Plan B was out in my garage.  I have a cat, so I have quite a few empty kitty-litter buckets with lids. Just the right size to fit in that small under-counter cabinet.  The plastic grocery bags are a perfect fit in a compact 30 lb size bucket.  The lid keeps the stink under control very nicely.

Also, I think that my Poopy Mache idea would be a great alternative if I should ever run out of plastic grocery bags.  Since the bucket is so small, it wouldn’t be hard to line it with old newspapers. That would be even more thrifty, AND environmentally friendly.

But I don’t know how well this would work with the unavoidable “goop” factor of trash. Maybe this would work if I rotated 2 or more kitty-litter “trash cans” - while one is being cleaned out and dried (goopy aftermath) a clean one would report for duty. Hmmm.  This seems like a good idea, but would I get tired of it?

The funny thing is that I use the same amount of “small” trash bags as I did the tall-kitchen variety.  Yee Haw! Maybe I’ll never have to buy a trash bags again.
