Frugal Idea for July 21st, 2009

AM I MIA?

No, here I am.  Just busy.

In big, big Frugal news I made my own ketchup yesterday.  Meatloaf was on the dinner menu last night.  When it came time to spread a generous layer of delicious ketchup frosting on top (the best part!) I discovered I had no ketchup.  Ye gods!

Thank goodness for the internet.  How did we all manage to EXIST before it came along?  I found a great recipe at hillbillyhousewife.com.  I was a little worried about my husband’s reaction to it, because he is very picky about his ketchup.  So just to fool him I put the homemade ketchup in a recyled Heinz bottle.  But I can never keep my big mouth shut; I always like to brag to my husband about my latest Frugal doings.

So I told him that there was actually homemade stuff in that-there bottle.  He liked it,though.  I like it too; I do think it’s a little on the sweet side, but that’s easy enough to fix - I can add more tomato paste to the concoction.  Next time I make it I just have to remember to not add so much brown sugar.  I wonder how it would taste with a splash of white wine?  That would be some really grown-up ketchup.

I like this recipe because it doesn’t require any cooking.  Hallelujah.  I always have lots of tomato paste on hand, so here is yet another item I can add to my “make from scratch” list.
